Grow Your Freelance Medical Writing or Editing Business with Confidence

Being a great freelance medical writer or editor isn't enough to build a successful business. Finding clients is a separate skill—and one most of us were never taught.

Freelance Flow is a 12-month coaching program for freelance medical writers and editors who want to build a stable, sustainable business. It’s part of a proven marketing system that will help you identify and attract the right clients by communicating your value clearly, focus your marketing on what works best, and market consistently.

You're Great at Medical Writing or Editing but Marketing is Different

You know how to explain complex science clearly. You deliver quality work.

But when it comes to finding freelance clients, everything can feel much less certain.

Maybe you're wondering:

  • Who should I market to?
  • How do I explain why someone should hire me?
  • What services should I promote?
  • Why isn't my marketing leading to more clients?

Medical writing and editing focus on information and educating people. Marketing is different. It’s about helping clients understand the problems you solve, the value you provide, and why you’re the right person to help them.

Without a proven system and expert guidance, it's easy to spend hours trying different marketing ideas without making any progress.

When work slows down—or when you're still trying to land your first freelance client—stress builds. Marketing often gets pushed aside because client deadlines feel more urgent. Then, when projects end, you're left scrambling to find new work. You may take on almost any project that comes along—even if the client isn't a good fit or the pay is too low.

It doesn't have to be that way.

Marketing isn't about being pushy or salesy. It's about helping the right clients discover your expertise, understand the value you provide, and feel confident reaching out when they need your services.

Marketing is a Skill—Not a Personality Trait

Like medical writing or editing, marketing is a professional skill. It becomes easier when you understand the process, practice it consistently, and receive ongoing feedback.

That's why Freelance Flow focuses on building a practical marketing system that gives you a clear path to building a stable, successful freelance business.

Why I created Freelance Flow

I've been a freelance medical writer since 1997 and a marketing teacher and coach since 2016. When I created my first marketing course in 2016, my goal was simple: teach freelancers the marketing strategies that had helped me build a six-figure freelance business.

The course has helped hundreds of freelancers gain clarity about marketing. They learned how to identify the right clients, communicate their value, and begin building relationships that could lead to future work.

Participants left the course feeling motivated and excited.

Then client work became busy. Marketing slipped lower on the priority list.

Without ongoing support, it became difficult to maintain the momentum created by taking the course.

That's when I realized that learning marketing wasn't the biggest challenge.

Doing it consistently was.

Freelancers needed ongoing guidance, accountability, and support while they built new marketing habits.

That's why I created Freelance Flow, a yearlong coaching program that gives you time to develop marketing that clearly shows clients your value, build relationships, and make marketing a consistent part of your business.

Lori somehow makes the hardest parts
of marketing feel approachable and even fun!

Communicate your value with confidence

Create a strong online presence

relationships

Create a marketing
system

Freelance Flow is designed to help you build the marketing skills, tools, and habits that support a successful freelance medical writing or editing business. Throughout the year, you'll work through a step-by-step marketing system while receiving personalized coaching, feedback, and accountability.

You'll learn how to:

  • Understand what clients really need. Effective marketing begins with understanding your clients' needs and how you can help them meet their needs—not listing your qualifications.
  • Identify the right clients. Focus your marketing on organizations that are most likely to value your education, experience, and expertise.
  • Clarify your services. Define the services you want to offer so prospective clients can quickly understand how you can help.
  • Communicate your value clearly. Learn how to explain what you do and why clients should hire you in language that's clear and client-focused.
  • Market authentically. Create marketing messages that feel natural, helpful, and professional, not pushy.
  • Strengthen your marketing tools. Develop a LinkedIn profile, website, and outreach emails that they work together to present a clear, consistent, client-focused message.
  • Build genuine professional relationships. Learn practical networking strategies that help you create meaningful connections and stay visible over time.
  • Use LinkedIn strategically. Increase your visibility where many clients look for freelance medical writers and editors.

Instead of wondering what marketing activity to try next, you'll have a practical system that helps you make steady progress, one step at a time.

"Taking small steps helped me build momentum. As I got accustomed to the marketing process, I built my confidence."

- Diana Henzel, PharmD, Freelance Medical Writer

"Deadlines kept me accountable. It's very easy to get caught up in client work and leave the unpaid, but necessary, work for another time, which inevitably never comes."

- Addie Nagy, Freelance medical writer

"I struggle with evaluating my own marketing work. I know something
is off but can’t pinpoint it. When Lori helps me, I can see that the output is much better.”

- Heidi Sawyer, PharmD, Freelance medical writer

Freelance Flow combines structured learning with personalized coaching to help you stay focused, keep moving forward, and continue building momentum throughout the year.

The program begins by identifying your experience, strengths, interests, and goals. Together, we'll create a practical marketing action plan that provides a clear direction for the months ahead.

Throughout the program, you'll receive:

  • 12 virtual coaching sessions to discuss your progress, answer questions, and plan your next steps
  • Email support between sessions whenever questions come up
  • Reviews of standard marketing assignments with detailed feedback to help you strengthen the way you communicate your value
  • Customized assignments based on your individual goals, experience, and business direction
  • Accountability reminders to help you do your marketing
  • Progress reports so you can see how far you've come and where to focus next
  • Dozens of templates, examples, and practical tips you can adapt for your business
  • A personalized marketing action plan that you can continue using long after Freelance Flow ends.

The goal isn't simply to complete assignments. It's to build a marketing system that becomes part of how you run your business.

Real Freelancers. Real Progress.

Addie Shows Clients Her Value Without Being Pushy

Addie Nagy launched her freelance business with a single client referred by a former colleague. But when that work slowed, she realized she didn't know how to find steady, high-paying clients on her own.

Marketing felt uncomfortable because Addie believed it had to be pushy and sales-focused. She wasn't sure how to communicate her value in a way that felt authentic so she could attract the right clients.

During Freelance Flow, Addie developed a clear, client-focused message and created marketing tools that reflected her expertise. She also learned how to market authentically, build professional relationships, and establish a sustainable marketing routine she can continue using as her business grows.

By the end of the program, Addie had seven new clients—most providing steady work at rates that reflected her expertise—and had transitioned from entry-level CME writing to higher-paying CME projects.

“Lori provided so much value it just blows me away. Her honesty and insights have helped me refine my message and showcase my work in a way that feels authentic and true to who I am."

Addie Nagy

Heidi Builds a Steady Pipeline Despite Increased Competition

For nearly 20 years, Heidi Sawyer, PharmD, built a successful freelance business with very little marketing. But as larger companies entered her specialty—AMCP and global value dossiers and P&T monographs—finding new clients became more challenging.

Like many freelancers, Heidi found marketing uncomfortable and overwhelming. She had a LinkedIn profile, a website, and professional connections, yet she wasn't attracting the steady, high-paying clients she wanted.

During Freelance Flow, Heidi learned that effective marketing wasn't about selling herself—it was about helping clients understand how she could solve their problems. She clarified her target clients, strengthened her LinkedIn profile and website, became more active on LinkedIn, and learned to network and follow up with confidence.

With personalized coaching, ongoing feedback, and accountability, Heidi developed clearer marketing messages, greater confidence, and a consistent marketing routine she can continue using long after the program ended.

By the end of the program, Heidi had attracted three new clients and was on track for her highest-income year ever.

“I tried for years to figure out marketing. During Freelance Flow, I got the help I needed to make my marketing effective and efficient.'"

Heidi Sawyer, PharmD
